September 28, 2008 marks the annual World Rabies Day. The international event is led by the Alliance for Rabies Control and involves health organizations across the globe. Although you might not realize it, rabies kills 55,000 people each year, half of which are children.

What can you do?

  • Make sure you keep your dog’s rabies vaccination current.
  • Emphasize to your children the importance of telling you about any animal bite.
  • When a bite takes place, wash wounds with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately.
  • If your dog is bitten, talk to your veterinarian immediately.
