Known by film buffs as an Academy Award winning actress, Glenn Close is equally recognized for her passion for helping pooches. The co-founder of the web site FetchDog.com, the silver screen legend recently honored the Puppies Behind Bars program, which allows prison inmates to give back to the community by training service dogs to aid the disabled, be companions for vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with post-traumatic stress disorder and act as explosion detection dogs for law enforcement. The Labradors and Golden Retrievers which enter the program at two months old and are raised for 18 months by the inmates were honored recently at Dog Tags: Service Dogs for Those Who’ve Served Us, an event held at The Atrium Cafe, Olympic Tower in New York City.
For those interested in the Puppies Behind Bars program, the book Puppies Behind Bars: Puppies Behind Bars: Training Puppies to Change Lives offers insight into the life lessons learned by both the canines and the inmates during their months of training.
