Do you think you can understand what your dog is saying? If your canine has you getting in touch with your inner Dr. Doolittle, a new survey shows you’re not alone.

A new poll from the Associated Press (www.ap.org) and Petside.com (www.petside.com), shows that 67 percent of those surveyed say that can understand their pet’s language. Also, 62 percent believe their pet understands what they’re saying.

The survey, which was taken by phone December 3-8, 2008 with 1,129 randomly chosen pet owners, also showed that dog owners are more likely than cat owners to believe in communication. Over two-thirds of the dog owners surveyed said their their dogs understood them when they speak to them, but just half of cat owners thought their feline understood them.

Women also are more likely to believe they’re linguistically in sync with their pets. Seventy-one percent of women think their pets understand them most of the time, and 73 percent said they understand what their pets are saying. Only about 53 percent of men, on the other hand, believe their pets understand them and 59 percent believe they understand their pets.
