Seen on Animal Planet last night, “Faithful Friends” with host Wanda Goldberg and Dr. Marty Smith of Doctors Foster and Smith Pet Supplies, reminded pet lovers that it’s the person on the other end of the leash–not the dog breed–that determines the aggressiveness of a dog.
Goldberg and Smith especially spoke about the reputation of the the American Pit Bull Terrier, once the top family dog in the US and even seen as the “babysitter” on the “Our Gang” TV show. “Don’t tell me that there are mean, vicious breeds, I won’t listen to it,” stated Dr. Marty Smith, who noted, “today, most every one of the Michael Vick dogs are living enjoyable and productive lives due to compassionate new owners who have dedicated their time and energy to rehabilitate these loving dogs.”
As Michael Vick prepares to be released to a halfway house on January 20th, 52 of his 53 dogs live in loving homes across the country. Leo, one of Vick’s former dogs, went through five weeks of training and rehab by California trainer Marthina McClay before entering a new life as a therapy dog at the Camino Infusion Center, where he brings comfort to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
“Faithful Friends” featured Chuck, seen above, one of Vick’s former dogs deemed un-adoptable. Today he live happily with his new owner.
