Sunday, February 15, 2009 marks the 16th Annual Beggin’ Strips Barkus Pet Parade–the biggest pet parade in the US and one of the largest pet parades in the world. Dog lovers can not only watch the parade of costumed canines but participate as well!
With about 8,000 participants, look for plenty of festive Mardi Gras costumes as man and his four-legged friends march through the streets of Soulard, an historically French neighborhood. Most parade participants are dogs but you’ll see a few cats (and maybe even a camel or llama) during the festivities, too.
To Participate: Dogs are subject to the approval of Mardi Gras, Inc. and the St. Louis Department of Animal Control based on appropriateness, temperament and health. There’s a $10 minimum donation per pet; the proceeds go to the Open Door Sanctuary, a local no-kill shelter with locations in and around St. Louis.
When: Pet registration starts at 10 a.m.; the parade begins at 1 p.m. at Allen and Menard. (The Grand Parade starts at 11 a.m.)
