Puppy mills–which breed dogs in horrible conditions in tiny cages with little or no medical care or even human interaction–are a growing problem. In an upcoming special episode of Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan goes undercover with Last Chance for Animals (LCA), an animal welfare organization, to check several LA County kennels that may be exceeding their legal limits in terms of capacity. The group works to rescue almost a dozen dogs that the breeders consider “worthless” then the rehabilitation with Cesar begins.
“We are at two different points of rescuing,” Cesar Millan said of his work with LCA. “They do the physical rescue, I do the psychological rescue. So together, it’s a team, it’s a good pack!”
Cesar’s work also includes rehabilitation of some dogs LCA rescued previously including Sophie, a 5-year-old Pekingese, and Lovey, a 6-year-old Yorkie. Each of these dogs had distinct behavior problems. Sophie had most likely never had any human contact outside the kennel and became aggressive at everyone except her foster mother. Lovey obsessively licked every human. Working with both, each dog learns calm behavior and the LCA learns how to help troubled puppy mill rescue does.
Seeing the conditions the dogs live in, it makes it easy to see why it is so important for dog lovers not to give in and purchase dogs from pet stores. “When you bring a dog into your life, please do your homework and don’t buy a dog from a puppy mill,” says Cesar Millan. “Visit a local shelter or rescue group instead.”
