On July 11, 2009, Cesar Millan presented a one-hour lecture in San Antonio’s Lila Cockrell Theater. The event capped off the River City Cluster of Dog Shows and Dog Awareness Week, focusing attention on San Antonio’s goal of becoming a no-kill city by the year 2012.
Millan emphasized the importance of spaying and neutering during his lecture. “Many dogs die because there is no home for them,” said the National Geographic Channel’s Dog Whisperer. “It is extremely important that we pass the word. I want to motivate people who are not thinking about spaying and neutering.”
The Dog Whisperer talked about his own personal commitment to the effort, not just for dogs but for humans. “I am not just doing it with my dogs; I am doing it with myself,” he told the crowd. The father of two sons talked about his own vasectomy and the importance of efforts to limit family size.
He also spoke about future planned efforts to promote spaying and neutering in Mexico and Latin America while emphasizing the problem in this country as well. “It’s extremely important that we embrace this concept because many dogs are dying every day. I am in the world of rescuing, rehabilitation, and placing [dogs].”
As for San Antonio’s efforts to become a no-kill city within the next three years, Millan noted, “San Antonio has a great opportunity to embrace this concept.”
Breed Banning
On the topic of breed banning, Millan explained, “Banning a breed doesn’t solve the problem. Education solves the problem.”
The owner of pit bulls Daddy and Junior and a rehabilitator of many dogs that fall into the forceful breed category, Millan’s comments were met with applause in the San Antonio theater. “Banning is just not a solution. It never will be, especially when it comes from fear or ignorance. It isn’t about the breed, it is about how do we keep our dog balanced.”
Following the lecture, Millan took questions from the audience, ones that ranged from a problem 16-month-old Yorkie that’s unable to greet other dogs to a Malamute that made mealtimes difficult.
