This tough economic period has been difficult on everyone and animal shelters have really been hard hit with donations down and more and more animals being surrendered to shelters.
We just learned of a great effort being launched across the US by maurices, 700 stores aimed at young women. The stores, located in 44 states, have launched Rescues & Runways. During the month of September, the stores will host pet-themed fashion shows, partner with their local animal shelter, sponsor pet supply drives to support their local shelter, and sell a special charm to benefit the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®).
The Rescues & Runways event kicks off on August 26 with a major fashion show and entertainment at maurices in Duluth, Minnesota, where the corporation’s home office is located. The event will include check presentations by Chief Executive Officer David Jaffe to the ASPCA and local partner Animal Allies.
From there, the shows spread to maurices stores around the country. Look for models from each community at these local shows; they’ll be walking the runway with the latest fall looks from maurices, along with a pet, of course, that is available for adoption.
Throughout September, people within these communities are encouraged to support their local animal shelter by bringing pet supplies to their local maurices store. Customers who bring in a donation will receive a coupon for 20 percent off one regular-priced item. The campaign goal is to collect 500,000 pounds of supplies across the nation.
Friends for Life Charm Also recognizing pet lovers’ devotion to their own pets, maurices is introducing a limited edition Friends for Life Charm; a celebration of the special bond people share with their furry friends. Women wear half the charm and the other half is worn by their pet.
The Friends for Life Charm is just $5 and will be sold in all maurices stores from mid-September through October 31. For every charm purchased, $2.50 will go to support the ASPCA and its national shelter outreach program. The ASPCA will receive a minimum donation of $50,000 from maurices with an ultimate goal of raising more than $100,000.

The biggest problem with lost animals is people not providing proper ID for their pets. Shelters and pet owners should check into a new program that provides id tags with live operator rescue support–called Pawtags. They shelters receive 72% of the profits from the program and it cuts down on animal control pick-ups and service costs because they reunite the lost pet with their owners!
Not only are 90% 0f non-id lost animals not found—over 75% of all domestic animals captured nationwide by Animal Control facilities are euthanized! There’s a great new pet rescue tag service called “Pawtags Rescue”- where each tag has its own id number and Live trained 24/7 Operator rescue services for $10!
Their service allows you to develop a profile with up to ten contact numbers, listing rabies id, microchip info, city licensing, vet and medical info along with the pet’s profile. When someone finds your pet the Operators access this confidential info and use it with Google Maps, 3-way conferencing, etc. to get your pet home or to a safe place until picked up. The service also auto-creates a PAWS Alert poster to print or PDF and more importantly gives an owner an Animal Control Facilities zip code search that provides the only locations in 50 square miles that intake lost pets! This is so important since in some cities animals only have 3 days to euthanization!
The tags are guaranteed for life, weatherproof, cool looking and for $10 you get tag and one year free service. You can upgrade to a lifetime for 19.99–so overall with a pets life average of 14 years that’s less than a $1.50 a year. It kind of reminds me of the Verizon support team commercials–you know if anyone finds your lost animal a live trained rescue person will make sure it gets home or to a safe place. Great deal–it’s at http://www.pawtags.com
