Developing a Dog Park: Reader Question

Welcome to our new Fetching Answers feature here on DogTipper.com! Our readers have all sorts of dog-related questions...and our readers are brimming with advice on life with our four-legged friends. Please email us your questions and we'll post them here, inviting all our readers to leave their answers in the comments section below each question. We start Fetching Answers with a question about developing dog parks:
We are a small city in Canada looking to develop a dog park. Our questions are many. We have had two very successful meetings so far, and would like to hear from other communities that have recently developed their parks.

A couple of questions that came up were: How did you decide on the size of your park? Did you allow for a small dog area? Were your local politicians receptive to the idea? Did you have any problems with the political process? How did you deal with the legal issues? I could go on and on. If any one that has been involved in the process has any comments please let us know how it went.

Thanks,
Bill

Fantastic! I wish you and your committee success. All I can offer you, though, is a plea for a small dog area. "Predatory drift" is an issue for dogs of all sizes interacting in off-leash dog parks, but it's particularly dangerous for small dogs, and a small dog area is an important safety feature: http://www.dogjaunt.com/2009/09/taking-your-small-dog-to-an-off-leash-dog-park/

Check out http://www.mcdogparks.org/ to see how a group of volunteers in my area did it.
"Friends of Monroe County Dog Parks is a volunteer group dedicated to building and maintaining safe, fenced, off-leash dog parks, through private funding, on land set aside by Monroe County, for the purpose of enriching our community, parks, and the lives of dogs and their owners."
We're so grateful for their efforts. A couple of weeks ago, they launched the first dog park and with three more to come dog lovers in my area have much to look forward to.

I am not sure about developing a dog park, but the maintaining of a dog park seems to be just as important! There is a dog park we used to love to go to; now it is constantly closed due to dumping in the stream. The news did a segment and they found dirty diapers, etc in the water and the bacteria level was too high to be safe for dogs to swim or play in it. If there were some trash cans, this might not be an issue? Not too sure... just a thought!
