Dog show champ turned therapy dog Rufus, a Colored Bull Terrier, visited the Ronald McDonald House of New York, a facility that offers temporary housing for pediatric cancer patients and their families, on Tuesday, November 3, 2009.

The most decorated Colored Bull Terrier in dog show history, Rufus is a Canine Ambassador for “The National Dog Show Presented by Purina®” and the Kennel Club of Philadelphia.

Rufus retired from the show world to work as a therapy dog, interacting with kids and adults alike at schools, hospitals, nursing homes and animal rescue leagues. Rufus does therapy dog work for Angel On A Leash and is certified with Therapy Dog International.

The Ronald McDonald House of NewYork, located on 73rd Street in Manhattan, hosted Rufus as part of its therapy dog initiative, which includes regular visits from celebrities and other famous canines, including Uno The Beagle.

Rufus was joined at the Ronald McDonald House of New York by an editorial team from Guideposts magazine, which is doing a feature on his work as a therapy dog in advance of Rufus’s November “National Dog Show” appearances.

Rufus’s Fame: Four years ago, Rufus pulled off the unprecedented feat of winning both “The National Dog Show Presented by Purina” and “The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show” within a span of three months. By going Best in Show earlier that year at the renowned “Morris and Essex (NJ) Kennel Club Dog Show,” Rufus became champion of three of the most important dog shows in America during the same competitive season.

Watch for Rufus: Rufus will also be appearing at the “National Dog Show” in Philadelphia on November 14 – 15 and NBC will include him in the popular two-hour Thanksgiving Day TV special, which follows the Macy’s Parade. Annually, the National Dog Show is the most watched event of its kind, generating almost 20 million total viewers on Thanksgiving.
