As we continue to follow the tragedy in Haiti, in this week’s Facebook Friday we wanted to highlight two organizations there now, one whose dogs (former rescues themselves) work to find survivors and the other moving into place to assist the animals of Haiti, both pets and livestock. We also have highlighted two unique rescue organizations.

Helen Woodward Animal Center

Located in Rancho Santa Fe, California, this unique center is home both to a shelter and many programs to help animals as well as programs to help people through animals, such as a therapeutic riding program. Look for wall postings on new arrivals to the center, special events (such as the Puppy Love Run next month), and celebrity help drawing attention to the center’s work.

Humane Society International

The international arm of the Humane Society of the United States, the HSI is now in Haiti working to assist animals following the earthquake. You can follow along on this page which so far has tracked the progress of the group after they landed in Santo Domingo, DR and made their way into Haiti.

National Disaster Search Dog Foundation

The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation trains dogs rescued from shelters and rescue groups to become rescuers themselves. Presently the foundation has dogs, paired with firefighters from California, searching for victims of the Haiti earthquake. This Facebook fan page includes updates on the rescue efforts as well as other rescues in which the foundation’s search dogs are involved.

Pet Project Rescue – Minneapolis, MN

If you’ve ever traveled to Cancun or Isla Mujeres, Mexico, you’ve seen the region has a dog overpopulation problem. Pet Project Rescue works, based in Minneapolis, works to rescue dogs from both destinations in Mexico (as well as local dogs and cats) and find foster and forever homes for these pets. You’ll find news of new arrivals and the non-profit’s work including upcoming adoption events.
