We’ll be exhibiting at next month’s Texas Pet Expo so we wanted to be sure to pass along news about the expo’s fundraising efforts!

PLANO, TEXAS – Oct. 15, 2010 – The Texas Pet Expo announced that a portion of ticket sales will be donated to Texas Hearing and Service Dogs, which trains dogs to assist Texans living with hearing or mobility challenges. The two-day Texas Pet Expo will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Plano Centre located at 2000 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano, Texas.

“Since opening its doors, Texas Hearing and Service Dogs has adopted more than 1,000 dogs from animal shelters across Texas,” said Anne D’Alessandro, managing director of the Texas Pet Expo. “These dogs not only get a second chance at life, but are trained to help Texans with disabilities, including many across North Texas. We’re very excited to be able to give back to this great organization by donating a portion of our ticket sales to support the great work they are doing across the state.”

Texas Hearing and Service Dogs adopts every dog it trains from animal shelters and rescue groups across Texas. Chosen for their personalities, the dogs are trained as Hearing Dogs, which alert their deaf partners by touch and lead them to sounds such as the smoke alarm or baby’s cry; or Service Dogs that assist physically challenged people by picking up dropped objects, opening doors and pushing elevator buttons. The organization uses only positive reinforcement training and invests $17,500 and one year to train each dog. Texas Hearing and Service Dogs’ training program is supported by donations made by individuals and organizations like Texas Pet Expo. They train and provide the dogs free of charge.

“We’re so appreciative that Texas Pet Expo is supporting us in our efforts to train more dogs for Texans living with disabilities,” added Sheri Soltes, founder and president of Texas Hearing and Service Dogs. “We just matched two of our dogs with residents in Allen who live with disabilities. There’s currently a one to two year waiting list for our dogs, but donations from great organizations like the Texas Pet Expo allow us to keep meeting the demand. We look forward to being at the Expo and sharing our training program with everyone who stops by our booth.”
