This giveaway is closed. Congratulations to Dianne, commenter #28, our winner!

A few months ago, we had a giveaway here on DogTipper of a print from Mark J. Asher, a well-known for his incredible dog photography and his best-selling book, Old Friends. Now we’ve got a new giveaway featuring Mark’s very personal book: Humphrey Was Here: A Dog Owner’s Story of Love, Loss, and Letting Go.

This memoir examines the grief the writer went through following the sudden death of his dog, Humphrey.  Best Friends magazine said of this book, “In the best memoirs of beloved canines, the universal and the personal meet and tell a tale of healing that speaks to all who need it. In Humphrey Was Here, Mark Asher has written such a book.”

My husband and I lost our beloved boy (Reggie) a year ago Memorial Day weekend. We are still heartbroken over the loss of this very special dog. We have 2 girl doggies at home, but our boy doggie can never be replaced! Some dogs come into your lives and never really leave – I even made a scrapbook of him and his picture sits on a table overlooking the backyard that he loved so dearly. :(

I’ve got a friend whose birthday is today 11/10/10 and is putting his cat to sleep tomorrow. What a crappy week. I know a book like this and support from family and friends would help him transition to living alone.

Often other people don’t really understand what someone goes through when they lose a beloved pet. It is good to see some one tell this story.

I recently had to say good bye to my dear four-legged best friend – Sparkles. She wasn’t even five yet. Unfortunately, she had a very rough start in life, which ultimately compromised her immune system. I refer to Sparkles as a miracle dog – a miracle she survived as long as she did, a miracle she was loving to humans and canines after what she had been through, a miracle that she touched so many people during her short life. Although I miss her tremendously, I know there is a part of her that is with me every day. Sparkles will forever remain in my heart.

I can’t wait to ready your book! I think of the day I found my Bailey, (my dearly departed Jack Russel Terrier), wandering along a busy boulevard, as I was doing errands. Little did I know the huge impact he would make on my life. Bailey was only with me for one year and 4 months, but he made way for me to open my heart and home and adopted (from local shelter, where I volunteer at), my new dog Teddy. Teddy is a small 12lb. terrier/poodle mix, who has brought back so much warmth and love. Thanks to Bailey reopening my heart, he mad way for Teddy to come into my life, work for and fight for animal rights. It is my privilege to be my pets (1 dog/4 cats) guardian parent!

I miss my Bailey so much. Would love to learn how to “let go”. She was my best friend! She’s been gone just over a year and my heart hurts every day.

  • Dawn Higgins

I’ve had to let go several pets throughout my life. None of them has been easy. I recently lost my German Shepherd and his seems to be the hardest of them all. Maybe it just gets harder as we get older, I don’t know. I rescue dogs and am part of a dog rescue. I evaluate dogs at shelters and it’s hard to “let go” when I leave. Bless them all, they will never be forgotten.

I just posted a memorial, to my beloved companion Phoenix on my FB page. He has been gone for 5 years now, and I still miss him. My favorite name for him was “wigglebutt”, when he was happy it would go a mile a minute. I now have a mini-schnauzer, named Cooper. He is 4 and hope to have many more happy years with him.

The photos in the book are beautiful! Would love to add it to my collection of dog books

  • Sarah

Losing a pet seems like it would be so painful! My dog is almost 8 and I almost cried the other day when I called for her and she came running to me, the sun was shining on her cute face and it was then that I seen all the gray hair on her face :( I couldn’t imagine my life without her!

  • Dianne

Humphrey was here would be a lovely prize.

  • Sharon

Yes, I’d like to win this book. It sounds great.
