Here at DogTipper, we love rescue dogs and have a very special place in our hearts for mixed breed dogs. We never miss watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on television every year, though. Why? We always learn something new about the many dog breeds thanks to the commentary by expert David Frei and his co-anchor. This year’s co-anchor will, for the second time in three years, be Mary Carillo.

Recently we had the chance to talk with co-anchor Mary Carillo about covering this special show, the second oldest sporting event in the US after the Kentucky Derby). Carillo, known for her tennis career as well as her broadcast experience, first announced at Westminster in 2009. Last year the sports analyst and commentator was covering the Winter Olympics but “when I was asked to do Westminster, I jumped at the chance. I am absolutely delighted to do it again. Sitting next to Dave (Frei), I have a good seat.”

The lifelong dog lover says, “For me, finding out why dogs are bred a certain way and for what is so interesting. Of all the mammals on earth, there are more varieties of dogs than any other. There’s just not another animal like dogs.”

With Carillo’s long history in the sports world, Westminster is another sporting event. “Many of the dogs we will see on Monday night are jocks. They have to have the right musculature to do the job they were bred to do. I think that’s cool.”

And, like other athletes, Carillo believes these four-legged competitors like to win, too. “When Uno won, it looked like he understood perfectly well that the applause were for him. He seemed to understand the emotion of the moment.”

But, win or lose, there’s one big difference between the dogs of Westminster and their human counterparts. Notes Carillo about these dogs, “If they know there’s a treat at the other end of it, they have a good time.”
