Dog trainer, author and TV personality Victoria Stilwell has received Global Pet Expo’s annual “Excellence in Journalism and Outstanding Contributions to the Pet Industry Award” from the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA). She accepted the award at the Purina® Media Reception at the Orlando show.
Stilwell is best known for her role as the star of Animal Planet’s hit TV series “It’s Me or the Dog,” through which she shares her insight and passion for positive, reward-based training. In the show, which airs in more than 40 countries, Stilwell teaches both owners and dogs through positive associations and confidence building techniques and vocally opposes the use of punitive, dominance-based training. Since its premier in 2005, Stilwell’s show has been the recipient of multiple honors including a 2009 People’s Choice Award nomination.
In 2010, Stilwell launched Victoria Stilwell Positively Dog Training, the world’s first global network of hand-picked, world class positive reinforcement dog trainers dedicated to providing the public a brand name they can trust in humane, force-free training.
In the above video, filmed by Global Pet Expo at the media reception, Stilwell talks about her upcoming book and her upcoming products. In addition to her work on “It’s Me or the Dog,” Stilwell has written It’s Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet and Fat Dog Slim: How to Have a Healthy, Happy Pet. Stilwell’s work with the Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project, the Humane Society of the United States, Puppy Mill Awareness Day and the Waterside Action Group have increased awareness of the practice of puppy mills globally. She is also the proud owner of a Chocolate Lab, Sadie.
“Victoria is known around the world as an advocate for dogs and positive reinforcement,” said Bob Vetere, president of APPA. “Her dedication to improving the lives of man’s best friend through training, education and rescue work have helped to promote the joys of responsible pet ownership. We are fortunate to have such a committed and passionate individual working within the pet industry.”
In honor of Stilwell’s award, Purina®, the sponsor of the media-exclusive event, is making a donation to the Victoria Stilwell Foundation. This organization provides financial support and canine behavior expertise to assistance dog organizations and small animal rescue shelters while promoting the concept of reward-based, positive reinforcement dog training philosophies in organizations and households throughout the United States.
