Katherine Heigl’s Foundation Helps Chihuahua Transfer

Actress Katherine Heigl, who starred in the box office hit Life As We Know It, has given 12 chihuahuas a new lease on life through the efforts of her organization, The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, The Boston Globe reports.

Often purchased as “accessories,” the fad of toting a tiny tail-wagger soon fades for fickle pet parents on the West Coast, who later leave the lap dogs at Los Angeles Animal Services, which have been reported to receive up to 340 Chihuahua and Chihuahua mixes on a monthly basis.

Hopes of adoption for the dozen dogs who left LA Kinder 4 Rescue Shelter were high, however, as the team of 12 boarded a plane headed for one of the largest no-kill shelters in New England, Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Massachusetts, which posted on their Facebook page on April 4, 2011: “Our California Chihuahuas are available and searching for loving homes today! Come on in and bring some sunshine to this rainy day!.”
