Two-time Olympic snowboarder Kazu Kokubo, who recently garnered his second consecutive US Open title, has also won the hearts of animal lovers with his announcement that he will take part in the rescue of animals in Japan.

Devastated by the destruction his home country suffered from the March 11, 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami, Kokubo and his wife Tomoe have chosen to give comfort to those who have been separated from the four-legged members of their family.

Searching online for an animal rescue to support, the couple found Japanese Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support (JEARS), a collaboration of three established and registered no kill animal rescue non-profit organizations in Japan consisting of Japan Cat Network, HEART-Tokushima and Animal Friends Niigata.

Kokubo, who currently lives in California, will travel to Japan in May to work side by side with other dedicated volunteers, offer financial support for the care of displaced animals, and film two Public Service Announcements in an effort to reach out to his fans in Japan and The United States.
