Rep. Grimm Adopts Rescued Puppy Mill Dog

“If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.” Taking Harry S. Truman’s advice to heart, Rep. Michael Grimm recently adopted a former puppy mill pooch who now runs with the big dogs in DC.

Little Sebastian, his mother and four siblings were just a few of the more than 100 dogs who had been saved from the squalor of a Missouri puppy mill by The Humane Society of the United States and Columbia Second Chance. While the hardship endured at the puppy mill proved to be too much for two of his littermates, who passed away shortly after the rescue, Sebastian was introduced to a new life as a Congressional canine companion on March 30, 2011.

Congressman Grimm, a former Marine who served in Operation Desert Storm, has helped to strengthen the bond between man and man’s best friend through his first bill in Congress. The Veterans Dog Training Therapy Act helps vets heal from post-traumatic stress disorder through dog training and handling of service dogs for the benefit of physically disabled veterans.

A further demonstration of his ‘dog’ged devotion, Grimm is cosponsor of Rep. Gerlach’s Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety Act, a bill to crack down on puppy mills and ensure that breeders meet standards which protect the health and safety of puppies.

“I want to lead by example. That’s something I’ve always tried to do throughout my career in the Marine Corps, in the FBI, and as a Member of Congress,” said Rep. Grimm. “As a dog-lover who fully supports improving animal welfare, I couldn’t think of a better way to do that than by adopting a rescue dog. I thank The Humane Society of the United States for all their help in making this possible and I look forward to giving Sebastian a great new home.”
