Julie Marie Berman has won two Daytime Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Lulu Spencer on the ABC daytime drama General Hospital, and now the soap star has won the hearts of dog devotees for embarking on a business which benefits our four-legged friends.

A disappointing pet supply shopping spree became a catalyst for forming a pet-related company with a social conscious: “We (Julie Berman and husband Michael Grady) were looking at the toys and products, they were such garbage, but were so expensive. Literally, within five minutes we realized that no one has designed focused, thoughtful, eco-conscious products.”

Launching Better Buddies, the team of Julie Berman, Michael Grady and business partner William Busch have developed products which promote the dream of an environmentally-friendly world while at the same time providing sweet dreams for sleepy Spots.

Better Buddies’ brand of pet beds, which include donut beds, pillow beds and bed rolls, are made of 100% organic cotton and hemp, with recycled PET fiber filling (made from recycled plastic bottles) for both the donut and pillow beds. Complementary to any accommodations, the sleeping surfaces are available in several stylish options, including Leaves in City Loft’s nuances of nature, the hand-printed textile pattern of the Small Mountains bed and the sophisticated Classic Stripe pattern.

Project Paw Benefits Best Friends Animal Society

Offering merchandise with a mission to help homeless pets, Better Buddies has created Project Paw– an umbrella for all of the company’s initiatives, the first of which is the Guardian Angel Project. 10% of the profits from Better Buddies pet beds will be dedicated to the continued care of special needs pets in Best Friends Animal Society’s Guardian Angel Program.

Fans may know her as Lulu Spencer, the daughter of daytime TV’s classic couple Luke and Laura Spencer on General Hospital, but when the cameras aren’t rolling Julie Berman steps into the role of animal advocate who promotes the option of shelter/rescue adoption. An ambassador for Best Friends Animal Society, the following video chronicles the star’s first visit to the renowned rescue organization:

After watching a man drop several puppies in a dumpster, my anger led me to write a novel about abused and abandoned animals. The novel is complete and I am now looking for someone who could help me get the novel published. The novel is titled, Legend of the DAR.

And yes, I did rescue the babies from the dumpster.

This fictional account is the adventure of a little dog with a brave heart, a gentle soul and a determined spirit. It is the story of Radar, the DAR, and his family’s adventure to save homeless and abandoned animals. The DAR finds his mission in life as he is drawn into the Outer World, a world of discovery, a world unknown. This is a tale of companionship, and inner strength, of faith and trust. It is a story of betrayal and redemption and in the end, commitment.

As the DAR travels through the Outer World with his devoted son, Beau, you will meet the cast of the forgotten and unwanted and discover the true meaning of courage and love. DAR leads you on a journey into the universe of the Omni, and the mysterious creature, LarZac, from another dimension born thousands of years ago.

DAR, the reluctant ambassador from earth, teaches a skeptical alien about the dignity of the non-humans, the four-footers (dogs and cats) and the hope for mankind. This fable is a voyage from adolescence to manhood, from desperation to hope. You will travel through the sadness of death and experience the ultimate joy of life, the true feeling and meaning of love.
