Harry Potter Stars Helping Dogs: Miranda Richardson and The Blue Paw Trust

Fans will soon flock to movie theaters to see the final installment in the Harry Potter franchise, but before we all watch the stars who brought J.K. Rowling’s characters to life on the silver screen we thought we might borrow Hermione Granger’s Time Turner and take a look back at the movie’s actors whose actions have helped to bring about a new life for pets in peril. The following is the third in DogTipper’s week-long series:

As a reporter for The Daily Prophet, Rita Skeeter’s  purple prose– which flowed from her Quick Quotes Quill– caused tongues to wag, but in real life tails have wagged over the philanthropic efforts of actress Miranda Richardson.

While on holiday in 2002, the actress was saddened by the sight of a Sri Lankan dog whose happiness hid his hurt from an injury which would, without proper treatment, take his life. The memory of the dog would later move the two-time Oscar-nominated star to join forces with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Sri Lankan charity The Blue Paw Trust to offer aid to the animals in Sri Lanka’s capital city, Colombo.

When Miranda Richardson and a camera crew traveled with The Blue Paw Trust on their rounds in one of two mobile clinics in 2007, the organization was helping to heal and spay/neuter 3,000 ‘community canines’ who considered the city’s streets home and educating the public about responsible animal guardianship.

According to the WSPA, the pilot program which Miranda Richardson helped to shine a spotlight upon led in 2008 to the start of a five-year stray dog project in the city of Colombo.
