Sports fans seated in the stands applaud Buffalo Sabres right wing Drew Stafford whenever he scores a goal, and now animal lovers are applauding the NHL star’s decision to adopt rather than shop when he chose his new barking buddy.
The athlete is now the proud pet parent of Harley, a Pit Bull puppy who was known as Navy by the volunteers at Joyful Rescues during his days at the no-kill, non-profit shelter in Cuba, New York.
Recognizing that there’s no place like home for dogs and cats to become acclimated to a loving family environment, Joyful Rescues’ founders Jeff and Joye Turock have opened both their home and hearts to animals who have been abandoned, rescued from puppy mills or born of an unexpected pet pregnancy. The property– which at eight, fenced-in acres offers resident Rovers plenty of space to play– also contains small housing facilities for pets, including a home just for cats. Caring fosters also play a role in helping orphaned pets find forever homes.
Joyful Rescues is open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., with all other visits by appointment only with approved application.
