Once a dog on death row, today a tiny terrier mix named Elmo is enjoying life in the limelight as the star of the new family-friendly flick, Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, which opens in theaters today.

News of the Rover’s rescue was relayed by actor Ricky Gervais, who lends his voice to Argonaut, the silver screen spy Spot. During an interview with British talk show This Morning, the celebrity stated: “I’m not the star of this film, it’s the dog, he’s the cutest dog in the world … He was a rescue dog, they were going to put him down but the crew saved him and put him in the film and made him a star.”

A high-profile pal to all with paws, funnyman Ricky Gervais has used his star wattage to shine a spotlight on an array of animal causes. The creator of The Office sported a temporary tattoo to highlight Humane Society International’s Cruelty Free 2013 campaign to ban animal-tested cosmetics, stepped in front of the camera to call for an end to bullfighting in a World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) PSA, and tapped into his inner Picasso to draw a caricature of himself with his cat companion Ollie for a magnetic bookmark which helps to provide funds for The Mayhew Animal Home in London.
