Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps possesses not only 14 gold medals, but also a heart of gold. The animal-loving athlete, who famously shared the spotlight with his English Bulldog Herman in a commercial for the 2008 Beijing games, is a new doggy Daddy to a shelter Spot.

Taking part in Jill Rappaport’s Bow to Wow! segment during his recent appearance on The Today Show, Phelps developed a case of puppy love for Penelope, a nine-month-old Catahoula mix from Animal Care & Control of New York. The pair got along swimmingly during the segment, and shortly after the pup became a part of the Phelps family.

Michael Phelps isn’t the first famous face to fall for one of Animal Care & Control of New York’s adorable adoptables in 2011. Earlier in the year Whoopi Goldberg welcomed into her home a Russian Blue kitten named Vinny, who was saved by an AC&C Animal Control officer after being tossed from a car on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York.
