Fans of films and Fidos will flock to the movie theaters on April 20, 2012 when Darling Companion is unleashed in theaters in limited release. The vision of Academy Award-winning director Lawrence Kasdan, the drama revolves around Freeway, a dog saved from the streets by a woman who finds herself on a personal journey when her beloved four-legged friend goes missing.

Dogged devotion isn’t an act for Diane Keaton, the movie’s leading lady, who plays a prominent role in saving the lives of shelter animals through her work with the Helen Woodward Animal Center. A long-time member of the organization’s board of directors, over the years the Oscar winner has shown her support for the renowned no-kill shelter by helping with telethons, taking on the role of spokesperson for a Home for the Holidays pet adoption drive and stepping in front of the camera for PSAs (like the one seen below) that reach out to an animal-loving audience.
