Country crooner Trace Adkins has earned a stamp of approval from his Fido-loving fans for delivering a heart-warming performance as the narrator of the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum’s new free eBook, Owney: Tales from the Rails.

Available online and as an Apple iPad app, the tome tells the true story of a stray Spot who worked his way into the collective heart of the nation in the late 1890′s by traversing across the country (and later, the globe) as the unofficial mascot for the Albany Post Office. (More than a century later, Owney continues to travel with the postal service on a recently released commemorative stamp.)

A proud pet parent to two Australian Shepherd dogs named Bella and Daisy, Adkins was happy to relay the history of the postal pup to a new generation: “As a father of five, history buff and animal lover, I am very proud to work with the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum to bring Owney’s fascinating story to life,” the singer stated. “The song and this story provide a fun way for families to learn together.”

Owney: Tales from the Rails was developed in tandem with the Postal Museum’s new Owney curriculum guide, which offers learning platforms for elementary students in geography, language arts and history.
