Cesar Millan is spreading the word about the worldwide event, which kicks off May 5th at 9 a.m. at North Shore Animal League America’s Pet Adoptathon Headquarters in New York, which will remain open for 36 straight hours. The New York event will be followed by a month of adoption events in more than 2,500 participating shelters across 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and six countries, which will try to find forever homes for the adorable adoptables in their care, just like the more than 300,000 dogs and cats who are now part of permanent families thanks to North Shore Animal League America’s previous Adoptathon efforts.
Each year more than 4 million of the estimated 8 – 10 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens who find themselves in the U.S. shelter system are euthanized. North Shore Animal League America (the world’s largest no-kill shelter and adoption organization) hopes that potential pet parents will heed the need to adopt a shelter pet, known as a Mutt-i-gree,® rather than perpetuating the problem by looking for a four-pawed pal at a pet store.
To pass a passion for compassion on to the next generation, Cesar Millan has partnered with the Animal League and Yale University School of the 21st Century to develop the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum, which is currently in over 900 schools in 39 states and in Canada. Cesar’s Millan Foundation funds the Curriculum, which highlights the unique characteristics of shelter pets and builds on the affinity between children and animals to teach empathy and social responsibility.
“My vision is for a life-long healthy relationship between dogs and people, and supporting the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of homeless animals through events like Pet Adoptathon is a vital piece of making that happen,” said Millan. “With the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum, we are increasing awareness of shelter animals while supporting the development of calm, confident and caring children who can make a difference in the lives of people, animals and the environment.”
