DOG TALK, April 14, 2012

This week on Tracie Hotchner’s weekly DOG TALK® radio show and podcast:

  • Why Omega-3 Fish Oil is Essential for Your Pets (And a discussion of Optimal Nutrition for Older Dogs) Because of negative comments about omega-3 oil made by a previous guest on the show — and Tracie’s research indicating their value to pets and people — she reached out to Nordic Naturals (a sponsor of the show and world-renowned for the quality of their many omega-3 products) to assist her in inviting leading authorities in the field to correct misconceptions about the absolute value of omega-3 oils in your pet’s bowl. (And your own diet, while you’re at it!) First you’ll hear from Stuart Tomc, a sought-after speaker on the subject of fatty acids, who is dedicated to educating the public about the nutritional benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. He introduces his mentor, Dr. Doug Bibus, who is one of the most respected international authorities and researchers on the essential nature of Omega-3. Dr. Bibus does DOG TALK® an honor by making time on short notice to come on the show and explain why omega-3 fish oil belong in every dog’s and cat’s bowl. [Dr. Bibus is a member of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids, the Health and Nutrition Division of the American Oil Chemists’ Society, and a member of and two-time winner of the American Chemical Society’s Award in Analytical Chemistry. (In appreciation for his generosity with his time, Tracie is sending Dr. Doug a copy of THE DOG BIBLE for his rescued dogs Tisha and Sophie and a copy of THE CAT BIBLE for his kitty Sassy).]
  • In the second half of the show, Tracie expresses her skepticism about the nutritional value of some of the prescription diets for older dogs and discusses how to read a label and what “whole grain corn” means as the primary ingredient in any dog food. Dr. Donna Spector, the Veterinary Nutrition Counselor for the show and the Second Opinion Vet, suggests some of the beneficial ways to provide quality nutrition and supplementation to aging pets. For a list defining what the words on a pet food bag actually mean, both Tracie’s books explain the definitions but you can also download the official AAFCO Definitions of Dog Food Ingredients.
