A Spot with a special place in her heart for our sea-faring friends, canine correspondent Phoebe Rose got along swimmingly with the stars who honored those who show devotion for protecting the ocean. Heal the Bay’s Bring Back the Beach awards gala was held on May 17th at The Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica, and the barking blogger shares snapshots of the soiree in the following report. Phoebe Rose’s fans can read more about her brushes with famous friends of Fidos at A Traveling Pug, and read about Rover-friendly hotel accommodations at Posh Pet Travel, which Phoebe Rose writes with help from her Mom, Sheila Appleby Williams.

The tony Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica was the venue for Heal the Bay’s annual Bring Back the Beach gala and awards dinner.
Guests wore beach chic attire (as requested), sipped, supped and raised funds and awareness for the local environmental cause.
This year’s honorees were: past president and chief operating officer of Hilton Hotels Matt Hart, director of photography Danny Moder, actress Julia Roberts and actress Amy Smart.
Honoree Julia Roberts was almost a no show due to work schedule-but came through for the cause and joined co-honoree, husband Danny Moder to discuss the couple’s involvement with Heal the Bay and their connection to the ocean.
Bring Back the Beach Board members: Amy Smart (Shameless), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) and Sharon Lawrence (Desperate Housewives, NYPD Blue) attended the sold out event.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus poses on the blue carpet:
As a proud pet parent to a rescue Labradoodle named Buttercup (who has gained fame as the inspiration for the politically-minded pup on Liberaldoodle.com), Brad Hall quickly bonded with Phoebe Rose.
Julia, looking svelte and stylish in an oceanic blue-green patterned sheath and coordinating stilettos, posed on the blue carpet while hubby, Brad Hall looked on admiringly. Her new show Veep, in which she stars as US Vice President- has brought out an assertive, confident Julia (unlike her ditzy character Elaine in Seinfeld) and when asked what she would do as the actual Vice President, she countered, “I’d take action!”
Phoebe Rose was tickled pink to meet former Baywatch star David Charvet on the blue carpet:
David Charvet, singer/actor (Baywatch) Rachelle Lefevre (star of Twilight Saga), Abigail Spencer (Mad Men) and environmentalist/actor, Peter Fonda walked the carpet for the fundraising benefit. Peter spoke passionately about the environment and the polluted ocean waters. He hasn’t ventured into water for the last 20 years.
Peter Fonda, who stepped in front of a photographer’s lens with his wife and Phoebe Rose, stepped in front of the camera for the recently-released family-friendly dog movie, Smitty. In 2010 the acting icon also used his star power to shine a spotlight on the American Humane Association’s Adopt-a-Dog Month.
Heal the Bay was founded more than 25 years ago by a group of Los Angeles residents who couldn’t stand to let unchecked pollution and toxicity claim Santa Monica Bay and the marine life that lives there.
