A doting Dad to three rescue Rovers, the actor’s fatherly instincts extends to the approximately 16,000 homeless dogs who receive comfort and care each year at Dogs Trust’s 17 rehoming centers. The star treasures his off-screen role as patron of the organization, and over the years the actor has helped to shine a spotlight on the dog welfare charity by stepping in front of a camera for an ‘A Dog is for Life, Not Just for Christmas‘ PSA; attending the grand opening of a Dogs Trust charity shop in Cowbridge, Wales, and by literally giving the shirt off his back for the paws cause with two online auctions of personal items. Thanks to fans who voted for the sci-fi hero in PetNet‘s first-ever Celebrity Pet Owner Awards, Dogs Trust will receive a £2,000 donation from the online community for dog lovers.
Touched by the honor, Barrowman stated: “I’m delighted to receive this Award. My dogs play such an important role in my life and I am proud to promote responsible ownership. I will be donating my prize money to Dogs Trust. As their patron, I understand how incredibly hard they work to find new homes for stray and abandoned dogs.”
Barrowman was chosen top dog in the competition after an initial list of 60 animal-loving luminaries was narrowed down to six finalists, including Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon; comedian Alan Carr; Sir Bruce Forsyth; TV presenter Clare Balding and comic/TV presenter Paul O’Grady.
