British actor Derek Martin, who entertained television viewers for 11 years as cab driver Charlie Slater on the long-running drama EastEnders, recently offered a a four-pawed passenger from the largest dog welfare charity in the United Kingdom a ride to a forever home, which she will share with the star.
Feeling the loss of his beloved dog Giles, who crossed Rainbow Bridge at the age of 16, the actor and his son David paid a visit to Dogs Trust Harefield, where he met Bernadette (aka Bernie), the 2-yr-old Labrador/Springer mix who has landed a starring role in the soap star’s heart.
Reminiscing about his former animal-loving co-star, the late Wendy Richard, (who US fans of classic Britcoms will remember as Miss Brahms in Are You Being Served?) as he looks forward to a future with his new barking buddy, the actor stated:
“I’ve been a supporter of Dogs Trust for many years and used to visit the Discover Dogs show with Wendy Richards and sign autographs for people in return for donations to the charity. After losing Giles we knew we needed another dog so naturally visited Dogs Trust and couldn’t help but fall for the charms of Bernie. She’s only been with us for a few weeks but has already settled in remarkably well and ironically is a big fan of travelling in the car, which given my previous life as Charlie is very apt!”
Dogs Trust Harefield is just one of Dogs Trust’s 19 rehoming centers throughout the UK which collectively care for approximately 16,000 abandoned dogs each year.
