My Best Friend
by John Bigley

My best friend lies sleeping in the sun
beside me, remembering the fun
we shared, coat full of burrs and a lolling tongue,
he seems to smile, four feet still running
as he dreams.

He’s always happy when I come to play;
he cocks his head a certain way,
trusting eyes seeming to convey
“Welcome, friend, what game today?”

And his wagging tail has much to say:
“You are my life and my best friend,
the world is ours, let’s play again!”

Before John and I married and turned our attention to guidebook and then eventually pet writing, John was a published poet and, with his book of poems, had done many public readings and appearances. Because of that, we always love to hear about poetry contests, especially those that help inspire a new generation of pet lovers like the Pets Add Life Children’s Poetry Contest!

Do you have a pet-loving child in the house with a little extra time on his or her hands over the holidays? Channel that energy into the creation of a poem for the 5th Annual Pets Add Life Children’s Poetry Contest — and your child could win a $250 gift certificate for pet products, a “by-line” in a nationally circulated publication, and a $1,000 scholarship to spend on pet-related education or to support a pet in their classroom!

Six winners will be selected, one for each level from grades 3 through 8. Teachers are also welcome to submit entries for their entire classroom.

Last year over 1,200 entries were submitted to this annual contest hosted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) in recognition of the joy that all pets provide us.

How to Enter

To enter, children should write an original poem about their pets and the the joy and love they provide. Post the poem online at  www.PetsAddLife.org or mail the poem and submission form to:

Is this for kids only in US? Can a child from Singapore participate? I’m unable to find such details in their contest rules.
