Years have passed since the day when I first met my ‘puppy love’, but the memory has made an indelible impression on my heart. Bounding up to the front of his cage the moment I stepped into the dog adoption area at my local shelter, the German Shepherd mix who would soon be known as Pepsi greeted me with an enthusiastic thump, thump, thump of his tail which seemed to telegraph the message, “I’ve been waiting for you! I just know that we’re going to be best friends.” Of course, he was right.
My mind also often replays the day when Garbo, my senior rescue cat, won a starring role in my life simply by extending her paw through the bars of her cage in a dignified gesture of friendship.
Would you like to make memories to last a lifetime with an adopted dog or cat, including loving seniors? On June 1 – 2, 2013, potential pet parents across the country will meet their new barking buddy or purring pal at the largest free pet adoption event in America– the fourth annual Maddie’s® Fund Pet Adoption Days.
The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals is leading the charge in New York City, featuring thousands of dogs and cats from more than 50 area rescue groups and shelters who are waiting for forever homes. Free adoptions for qualified pet guardians will be offered throughout the weekend at participating shelters and other adoption locations, and at at two large, outdoor adoption events in Manhattan, all with the goal of finding pet parents for at least 1,000 dogs and cats.
In all, a total of 100 locations in five states will participate in the weekend-long event, which hopes to place 5,000 adorable adoptables across the country with loving pet parents. Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days will also take place in San Francisco, California; Santa Clara County, California; Alachua County, Florida; Dane County, Wisconsin; Alameda County, California; Contra Costa County, California and Washoe County, Nevada. (To see all cities in Maddie’s® Pet Adoption Days, click here.)
A happening with heart, the event will also help future homeless Fidos and felines, as Maddie’s® Fund will present each participating shelter or rescue with a reimbursement rate ranging from $500 for each young, healthy companion animal they adopt out to $2,000 for each senior (age seven or older) dog or cat with at least one treatable medical condition from their organization who finds a forever home over the course of the two-day adoptathon.
The pet adoption event is just one way that Maddie’s Fund celebrates the legacy of Maddie, a Miniature Schnauzer who brought joy to the lives of business mogul Dave Duffield and his wife, Cheryl.
