Children across the country are receiving an education in empathy thanks to the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum.

As a spokesperson, Renée Felice Smith–known to fans of the hit CBS series NCIS: Los Angeles as analyst Nell Jones– co-directed and starred in a PSA to promote the program, which offers lessons in social and emotional skills through hands-on activities, readings, role playing and discussion as a way to pass on a passion for compassion for shelter dogs, or Mutt-i-grees, to the next generation. More than 2,000 schools nationwide have already utilized the program.

The actress, who recently acted as spokesperson for North Shore Animal League America’s Tour for Life adoption drive, stated: “We take tests, we study for the SATs and that’s all fine and good, but what the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum does is show another side of the spectrum, and show another side of learning and becoming a whole person. I think that that basically is the key to building a more compassionate society, a more accepting society. A society that has more tolerance for each other.”
