Ian Somerhalder To Be Celebrity Monarch at Mardi Paws Parade

41EVrYdkP8LTelevision viewers may know him as immortal Damon Salvatore on the hit series The Vampire Diaries, but on March 9th Ian Somerhalder will step into a much different role as he acts as the Celebrity Monarch of the Super Krewe of Canines at the upcoming Mardi Paws celebration.

The Ian Somerhalder Foundation is one of the ‘top dog’ sponsors of the 2014 event, which is celebrating 20 years of dogged devotion to both Fido-centric fun and philanthropy with a Live from the Red CarPET theme, the Times-Picayune reports.

Costume Contest

Bringing an extra touch of Tinseltown to the event, Spots can unleash their inner celebrity in the costume contest, complete with Fidos donning funky frocks for a MTV Awards-inspired appearance, glamming it up Grammy-style, or stepping out in canine couture like an Oscar nominee, all in the hope of winning a coveted “Solid Gold” Poop Trophy.

A Happening with Heart

A ‘paw’rade with a higher purpose, Mardi Paws will raise funds for three charities: Scott’s Wish, which helps those suffering from leukemia and other illnesses; Have a Heart Thru Art, which offers access to the world of creativity to underprivileged and disabled children, and The St. Tammany Spay and Neuter Program, which tackles the problem of pet overpopulation through low cost spay/neuter services for rescues and the companion animals of those in financial distress.

Registration: online registration to participate in the parade is $15 per dog, with a $45 family discount for those with three or more dogs from the same home

When: March 9, 2014, with the parade getting underway at 2 p.m.

Where: The parade route begins at Jackson Avenue in Mandeville, Louisiana
