LyonsAs an entertainment journalist he’s gained fame for reporting Tinseltown’s top stories, but now Ben Lyons has stepped in front of the camera to shine a spotlight on homeless animals who are hoping to land starring roles in the hearts and homes of forever pet parents.

Confessing that he was once a scaredy cat when it comes to canines, Lyons tells viewers about the family dog who helped him overcome his fear of Fidos in episode six of the eight-part PetSmart Charities web series Rescue Waggin’: Tales from the Road.

The son of television and film critic Jeffrey Lyons and grandson of New York Post columnist Leonard Lyons, Ben’s appearance marks the start of a webisode dedicated to the importance of family as the camera captures the adoption stories of Jasmine, Porter and Sam– three of the traveling tail-waggers who dog devotees have followed as they trekked 600 miles from Missouri to Minnesota in a PetSmart Rescue Waggin’ vehicle for the chance to embark on a new chapter in their lives.

Lyons is the latest luminary to have a cameo in the pet-centric presentation, which debuted with an introduction by Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell and continued with So You Think You Can Dance judge Adam Shankman, Poison frontman Bret Michaels, comedienne Rita Rudner and Glee cast member Harry Shum, Jr.

Produced by DakotaKid Media, the production company owned by actor Josh Duhamel (who also narrates the webisodes), Rescue Waggin’: Tales from the Road showcases the life-saving efforts of the PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin’ program, which transported 11,000 pets in 2013 in eight trucks which traversed to 41 animal shelters at 19 different destinations.
