Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days Set for May 31, June 1 #MPADNYC

As you know, we’re all about adoption and rescue here at DogTipper and on CatTipper. With four cats and two dogs in our home, we can honestly say that our lives would not be the same if our homes–and our hearts–weren’t shared with our furry family members, each an animal who began life as a stray. Thanks to shelters, each was rescued from the streets and found their way into our forever home.

Irie, above, really led us down the pet path. Her adoption in February 2008 led us to start reconsidering our careers as travel writers, and motivated us to find a way we could stay home from our previous life on the road as Caribbean guidebook writers.

Irie’s story, like many pets who wait in shelters, was largely unknown. She’d been found as a stray, running the streets in town, picked up and taken to the local shelter. She had some large visible scars, perhaps caused by dogfighting, and some invisible ones as well that left her a very shy and fearful dog. Irie also suffered from demotectic mange. With some love, veterinary care, and time, though, Irie has blossomed into a dog who loves to travel, like this week’s trip to the beach:

There are SO many dogs like Irie waiting in shelters all around the country. Some may need a little extra TLC; others, like Tiki, are ready to just bound into someone’s home and let the fun times begin.

On May 31 and June 1, a very special adoption event will be held in nine states. Involving 200 shelters and rescue groups, Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days is the largest free pet adoption event in the country on May 31 and June 1. (While adoption fees will be waived for qualified pet parents during the event, the standards by which companion animals will be adopted remain the same as on any other day of the year. At last year’s adoption weekend, more than half of the new pet parents who adopted the more than 5,000 felines and 3,000 Fidos who found forever homes at the event stated that the waived fee prompted them to welcome a furry family member into their heart and home.)

14_MA_MaddiesEventBannerFBHelping to turn the dream of empty shelter cages from reverie into reality, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals will present hundreds of adorable adoptables from area rescues and shelters with the Big Apple’s largest events held outdoors at the Petco at Union Square on the May 31st and Union Square Park in June 1st. Along with free adoptions in New York, homeless pets at participating locations in Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin will also have a chance at a new lease on life thanks to the popular adopt-a-thon.

It’s all thanks to a miniature Schnauzer named Maddie, the muse for PeopleSoft/Workday co-founder Dave Duffield and his wife and Cheryl’s mission to help companion animals in need. Although their beloved little dog crossed Rainbow Bridge in 1997, her legacy of love lives on through Maddie’s Fund, which will once again hold a two-day adoption event in the hope of finding forever homes for 10,000 canines, cats, kittens and puppies who have all been spayed/neutered and vaccinated.
