Rescue Dog Stars in The Threepenny Opera

When the off-Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera closes at The Atlantic Theater Company on May 11, 2014 the audience will give a round of applause for Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham, Tony nominated star Laura Osnes, actress Lilli Cooper… and a rescue Rover who won both rave reviews and the hearts of theater lovers.

Fate had cast Escobar in the all too real role of a neglected dog until Associated Humane Society branch in Newark, New Jersey stepped in to offer the English Bulldog a second act in life. Under the loving care of the nonprofit organization the canine was cured of kennel cough and cherry eyes, and when he met his new forever pet parent– famed animal trainer Bill Berloni– the dog now dubbed Romeo left his old life of dark despair in the distant past and stepped into the spotlight.

A long-time supporter of the Associated Humane Society, for more than three decades Bill Berloni has saved homeless dogs and given them new leases on life in the limelight with roles on the silver and small screens as well as on stage. (Berloni’s charming chihuahua Roxie can be seen starring with Audra McDonald in the Broadway production of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, and Trixie, a Pomeranian adopted by Berloni in August 2013 from Pet Rescue NY, currently shares the Broadway stage with Zach Braff, Vincent Pastore and Karen Ziemba in a theatrical adaptation of Woody Allen’s movie, Bullets Over Broadway.)

The largest animal sheltering system in the state of New Jersey, Associated Humane Societies can be found in Newark, Forked River and Tinton Falls. The Society also provides a refuge for abandoned, abused, injured and senior farm animals, wildlife and exotic animals at Popcorn Park.
