Pergo, Anyone?

pergoI guess it’s a case of spring fever but I’m on mission lately: figure out a better flooring for our kitchen (and maybe our adjoining living room).

Right now, both the kitchen and living room (sort of a great room/open concept combo) have painted wood floors. The living room floor is painted light gray (which shows dirt and scratches) and the kitchen floor is painted dark brown (which shows every crumb!)

So I’m thinking it’s time for a change. The last time we went to the home supplies store, I picked up some samples of Pergo laminate flooring, which is advertised as especially attractive for homes with pets.

Have you tried Pergo in your home? I’d love to get your feedback! We have four cats and two large dogs so scratches are a real issue. Do you see scratches in your flooring? Is it easy to clean?

And we’re DIYers (which is how we got in the whole painted flooring situation in the first place.) Did you install your own flooring? Was it fairly easy? I’m also looking at tile flooring but it looks tough to trim and difficult to install.

What do you think??

I had Pergo installed in a former house, way back in 1999 (when it first came out in the U.S.) I did have it professionally installed, but it looked amazing, and no one could tell it wasn’t real hardwood. It was a must, considering I had multiple dogs, foster dogs, and lived in New England, when we had snow/wet yard for about 6 months or more out of the year. It cleaned easily and NEVER scratched.

However, I have read that Bamboo flooring is very hard, it’s obviously a “green” choice, so perhaps this is something you could look into as well.

NO PERGO!!! It is slippery and dogs have a hard time walking on it! It also warps when it gets wet so it is not a good idea for a kitchen…sorry. I do know people who install it themselves and they love it. I also do not like the fact that Pergo is glued together…who knows what chemicals are in there. Bamboo is a great natural alternative; however, I heard that it scratches…maybe the new stuff is harder. Why not just paint the floor a different color…you could even paint a pattern in…so it does not show scratches or crumbs.

Hi Michelle, Thanks so much for your note…I love the thought of no scratches! Besides the dog/cat dirt, we live in the country so we’re always tracking in dirt ourselves so it sounds wonderful to have an easy to clean floor. I’ve got to look into bamboo, too; I LOVE bamboo everything and didn’t even think of that option for flooring!

Hi Candy, Thanks so much for your note…I love the bamboo idea, too! I’ve got to check into it and see how it would hold up with our dogs and cats. (I’m a bamboo nut anyway…I have everything from mirror frames to cutting boards in bamboo so I don’t know why I didn’t think of that option.) I might wind up painting the kitchen the light gray I’m using on the living room which seems to be the lesser of two problem paints. I had no idea I had so many crumbs in the kitchen until I painted the floor a dark color. This all may say far more about my housecleaning than my choice of flooring ;)
