Eukanuba 28-Day Challenge, End of Week 1

Last week, we started the Eukanuba 28-Day Challenge with both Irie and Tiki. Today was the day for Irie’s annual wellness exam and, as usual, we took Tiki in with us, too. (Both dogs go to each other’s wellness exams so they learn that every visit to the vet’s office doesn’t mean shots and blood draws…sometimes you just get petted and get treats!)

Our vet said that both dogs looked really good and she had only one concern: their weight. Irie weighs 75 pounds and Tiki is 66 pounds. (Both girls were weighed with their harness, collar, and leash on.) We talked with our vet about the dogs’ participation in the Eukanuba 28-Day Challenge and, along with the new food we’re now carefully measuring for them, she recommended we also increase their activity level.

After what seems like a really cold winter (at least in Texas terms), we’re finally enjoying warmer weather again and, starting today, we’re increasing their activities with an extra 15 minutes on both the morning and evening walks…so that brings us up to 90 minutes of walking daily as well as some Frisbee tossing. (The dogs aren’t great with Frisbee or any kind of fetching. Actually Irie likes fetching but Tiki’s idea of fetching is to chase Irie and then wrestle. Hey, it still beats hanging out on the couch.)

Since starting the Challenge, we’ve been really good about measuring each dog’s food. (I have to admit that in the past I’ve been bad about measuring equal amounts of food into each plate but Tiki does not need as much food.) I talked with our vet about working on their weight loss and she said that a good weight control program of diet and exercise we should expect to see about 1.5 pounds per week in weight loss for dogs their size.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on each dog’s weight and reporting back to you as we continue with the Eukanuba 28-Day Challenge! We’ll be weighing each dog again when we complete the Challenge!
