Learning About VueZone

Do you ever wonder what your pets do when you’re not home? We know we do. We suspect they nap…a lot…but still we’d like to be able to check in on Irie, Tiki and our cats just to put our minds at rest. When we’re just out to dinner, it would be nice to take a quick peek and see how the dogs and cats are doing. And when we’re on a longer trip and have a petsitter to care for everyone, it would be wonderful to just take a look and see for ourselves that all’s OK.
It is possible for pet lovers to check on their furry family members with video monitoring systems like VueZone. Today we took part in a webinar to learn more about this system. What sounded especially attractive to us is the fact that the VueZone installs without wires and without software. We really, really liked the thought of that; there’s no big installation job and no wires for a dog to chew. This system installs quickly, as seen in the VueZone video below:
The live feed, viewable on any computer, is free. If you’d like to store video (recording kicks in when there’s motion detected or when you tell it to record), there’s a Premier plan for $4.95 a month.
We announced on Facebook and Twitter that we would be participating in the webinar today, and some of our followers had questions:
Does the camera make noise when it pans? Would it attract the attention of the pets?
The camera itself does not pan; you pan the image on the computer.
Should you mount the camera out of reach of the pets?
It depends on your pets. Most people mount the cameras at about eye level; since they’re placed with magnets, you can point the cameras downward to your pet. Some people, though, mount the camera at the level of their dog’s bed. It just depends on your pet’s habits.
Can the camera work with a land line or is a high speed connection required?
You will need a high-speed Internet connection.
Does it run on batteries? If so what is the lifespan and does it work if there is motion or is it continuous?
The VueZone camera uses the CR123 Lithium photo battery; they are not rechargeable. VueZone estimates a 6-month battery life. The video stream is continuous; if you opt for a paid plan to record the video, the recording only starts when motion is detected. You can view the feed on a computer or smartphone for free and that is continuous.
If it is motion sensor activated, does it follow the motion or is it stationary? I also want to know battery life. And installation – is it easy to install and how many can you install?
The motion detection cameras do sense motion and those can send you an email alert (with a snapshot or a video clip) when they detect motion, if you like. All the cameras feature zoom and pan so you can follow the activity or look around the view zone. VueZone estimates the battery life to be six months with normal usage. The camera isn’t on 24/7 but is intended to be on when you want to view your pets or, in the case of the motion detection cameras, when the camera detects motion. The installation looks very easy with peel and stick mounts (see the above video to watch the installation). You can have as many as 15 cameras on one system.
While we haven’t tested the VueZone, we think it sounds like a great addition to pet households for your peace of mind when you can’t be home with your furry family members.
Price: The VueZone system starts at $199.95 (one motion detection camera) for the SM2200. The SM2500 system features one indoor camera and one motion detection camera and is priced at $249.95. The SM2700 system includes two motion detection cameras and is priced at $289.95. You can purchase additional indoor cameras ($79.95 each) and motion detection cameras ($99.95) for up to 15 cameras per system. VueZone is going to start offering an outdoor shell to protect cameras for outdoor use.
