Preparing for Irie’s ACL Surgery

Well, what a difference a day makes! Last Thursday, we were making plans for Tiki’s sixth gotcha day AND the sixth anniversary of DogTipper this coming Thursday. We were looking forward to our summer vacation that we had booked in early September with Irie and Tiki at the coast.

And then Friday morning along came one of these little guys…

Just as Irie and Tiki were walking outside for their morning potty run on Friday, a squirrel darted through the yard…and off they went, racing full speed to the back fence. The run was followed by a yelp of pain…from Irie.

She had blown her ACL.

After a trip to the vet and a round of X-rays on Friday, Irie is set to go to a specialist on Monday, probably for surgery Monday afternoon. Right now she’s on two kinds of pain medications and resting comfortably although, as you can see in the photo above, she can only walk on three legs.

If she gets the surgery on Monday afternoon, she’ll be overnighting at the hospital on Monday (her first night ever away from home without us!) then returning on Tuesday. It’s a pretty long recovery time from this surgery, as we’ve been reading, but we’ll know more on Monday.

We’ll keep everyone posted on Irie’s recovery as we get our girl all fixed up so she can resume the fun as soon as possible. In the meantime, we have to figure out how to encourage Tiki to leave the house without her for walks (NOT an easy proposition) and how to prepare our house for Irie’s comfort on her return on Tuesday!

    What is “ACL”?

It’s Anterior Cruciate Ligament surgery to repair the torn ligament in her knee. In canines, it’s often called Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) surgery, too.
