Our Quick Trip to Surfside Beach, Texas

This summer has been speeding by in a blur. Between our Day Trips from Austin book deadline, our increasingly busy PawZaar gift store, the Austin Pet Expo, and more, June suddenly became August…and we decided it was time for a quick little beach getaway.

We usually head to Port Aransas but rates are high during the summer months (and the cottages where we stay have a two-night minimum) so we opted to do something different this one-night trip. We decided to try out Surfside Beach, Texas, a small coastal community southwest of Houston.

Surfside Beach is small — without the beach surf shops and numerous restaurants of Port Aransas — but just right in terms of crowds during this peak season.

We booked our stay at Ocean Village Hotel, a dog-friendly property right on the sand…

Our room was recently remodeled, located in a motor court just behind the main building and literally steps from the beach…

With our short stay, we weren’t in the room much but quickly dropped our things and headed to the beach.

Irie’s favorite thing to do at the beach is always the same: people watching (like the angler trying his luck in the shot above) or, most especially, digging in the sand…

And when she’s not digging, she’s rolling…

…and rolling…

Tiki likes to walk at the beach and, with the record heat we were experiencing this week, that meant frequent dips in the water…

Tiki also liked watching the people up in the nearby Pirates’ Alley Cafe, the hotel restaurant…

…so that evening we headed to the restaurant for dinner on their dog-friendly patio (and again for breakfast the next morning):

This was a short trip to Surfside Beach…but we’re already looking forward to returning for a longer stay during off season!
