Keeping a promise made after the airing of a puppy mill episode that she would adopt instead of buy from a breeder, media mogul Oprah Winfrey paid a visit to PAWS Chicago on March 1, 2009 and brought home a blonde-haired bundle of joy in the form of an 8-week-old cocker spaniel who will grow up to look similar to the one pictured here. Luke and Layla–the star’s two golden retrievers– were no doubt excited by the arrival of their new sister, who was referred to as “Amanda” during her time at the shelter by the staff of Chicago’s largest no kill humane organization, US magazine reported. (Days later Oprah revealed that Sadie is the new name for her four-legged friend.)
PAWS (Pets are Worth Saving) holds a special place in the TV presenter’s heart. Following the loss of her beloved cocker spaniel Sophie, Oprah donated $10,000 to Chicago’s largest no kill humane organization, where Sophie’s legacy lives on in a room dedicated in her memory. (See photos of Oprah with Sophie in our celebrity canines section.)
Since its founding in 1997, PAWS has helped to cut in half the number of homeless animals who are needlessly euthanized in the Chicago area. If you would like to adopt a pet from PAWS or would like to make a donation:
