With each tail that has wagged at the sound of her voice and every kiss she has received from a furry face, dogs have been saying “Thank you for being a friend” to one of the entertainment world’s most beloved defenders of the animal kingdom, actress Betty White.
Since her childhood days in a family with a passel of pets, the Emmy winning actress (who has honored our four-footed friends in a number of books, including Betty White’s Pet Love: How Pets Take Care of Us and Together: A Story of Shared Vision) has cultivated her compassion for all creatures great and small into a role of a lifetime– that of a protector of animal rights through a number of organizations.
Actors & Others for Animals
Betty is a board member of this Los Angeles-based organization, which is currently headed by fellow funny woman JoAnne Worley. Founded in the early 1970′s, Actors & Others for Animals has played a vital role in bettering the lives of dogs, cats, rabbits and more by funding more than 1,200 spay/neuter procedures each month for the pets of those with fixed incomes in the Southern California area, offering humane education to students, and helping to heal the souls of those in hospitals through a Pet Therapy Program.
