A tiny, meowing kitten named Mimsie may have been the signature sign off for her production company MTM during her days as the small screen’s sitcom queen, but in real life dogs are the mascots of small screen legend Mary Tyler Moore .
The star’s affinity toward Fidos reaching back to her childhood, when she defended a dog against its angry owner, today the co-founder of Broadway Barks leads a vegetarian lifestyle in deference to all our animal friends and shares her home with two tail waggers– a Schnauzer called Shana and a Golden Retriever who goes by the name Shadow.
Broadway Barks
A long time advocate of many causes which support our pals with paws (the following photo shows the star at a celebrity fashion event held for Actors and Others for Animals in 2002), Mary Tyler Moore co-founded Broadway Barks in 1999 with fellow A-list animal lover Bernadette Peters. Each July, glitterati from The Great White Way gather at Shubert Alley to shine a spotlight on the issue of homeless pets.
In 2008, more than 26 animal shelters from the New York City area took part in the event, in which more than 125 furry friends found their forever homes.
