She convincing portrays a surgical resident on the ABC series Grey’s Anatomy, and when it comes to saving the lives of our four-legged friends Katherine Heigl is just what the doctor ordered. A dog devotee who has been a Momma to a coterie of canines over the years, the Emmy-winning A-lister has used her star wattage to shine a spotlight on animals looking for their forever homes at the Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control and at Pedigree’s annual adoption drive. In recognition of her efforts to better the lives of our canine companions, Best Friends Animal Society will honor the actress at their 25th Lint Roller Party in October 2009.
Jason Heigl Foundation
Gone at the age of 15, Jason Debus Heigl had a special place in his heart for dogs, cats and monkeys. His affection for animals lives on through the foundation launched by his famous sister and mother, which celebrates Jason’s memory each day by giving aid to animal shelters, highlighting the struggle to end animal abuse and neglect and by helping homeless pets find loving parents.
For bigger barking buddies, the foundation has developed The Heigl’s Hounds of Hope program, which rescues medium and large-size dogs on their last days at high-kill animal shelters throughout Southern California. The program provides dogs with basic obedience training, vaccinations and a micro-chip as they wait for their future family members to come and adopt them.
