A part of actor Jorge Garcia’s heart will always remain on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, not only for the years spent in front of the camera on one of television’s most iconic programs, but also for the off the set memories made with a four-legged family member he found himself saying goodbye to as he departed the island– his beloved Chihuahua, Nunu.
A part of his life for almost five of the years in which Lost was in production, Nunu became a star in her own right with a cameo appearance in the “Everyone Loves Hugo” episode of the ABC series and through the many photos and videos her proud human parent posted on his blog, Dispatches From the Island.
Fans who had sobbed as they watched the loyal bond between man and dog play out on the small scene during Lost‘s final moments were brought to tears once again by Garcia’s real life tragedy as they read the actor’s May 31st post, titled, “Nunu, The Greatest”:
“It breaks my heart to tell you that yesterday as we were preparing to all go to the airport Nunu was struck by a car as she crossed the street. She died in my arms.”
Nunu was laid to rest in the Pet Garden at Valley of the Temples in Kaneohe. Garcia told fans that “Three months from now you’ll be able to find a bronze plaque inscribed with just her name there. If you’d like to leave a flower or a toy, I’m sure she’d love it.”
