elise-overland-front-row-backstage-spring-2011-mbfwAs a model and heiress to a publishing empire Amanda Hearst may be a star of the New York social scene, but the great-granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst recently used the spotlight of celebrity to shine a light on one of the darkest aspects of the dog world.

Discovering that her own darling dog Finn had a puppy mill past, Hearst founded Friends of Finn, which she co-chairs with her mother Anne Hearst McInerney, to combat this canine crisis. The HSUS committee, which has joined together a number of New York notables including Annie Churchill Albert, fashion designer Kimberly Ovitz, Georgiana Bloomberg (the daughter of Mayor Michael Bloomberg), Kick Kennedy and more, has raised gifts and matching grants for a tri-state puppy mill public awareness program, and sold tables for the HSUS Make History Gala, which took place on September 22, 2010 in the ballroom of The Pierre Hotel in New York City.

Hosted by Moby, the Make History Gala was held to raise funds for several programs that will fight the plight of puppy mills. The efforts of Friends of Finn were recognized during the elegant event, which included a showing of the touching video (seen below) which takes viewers along on Hearst’s heartbreaking encounter with dogs living in the deplorable conditions of a puppy mill.
