“A heart is not judged by how how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” Although these words of wisdom were spoken to The Tin Man, the quote could easily pertain to a tiny Cairn Terrier who followed the Yellow Brick Road not only to the Emerald City in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, but also straight into the hearts of fans of both films and Fidos.
Hoping to pay homage to Dorothy’s beloved barking buddy, admirers of the tiny tail-wagger have begun their own quest to have a marker made in loving remembrance of Toto.
According to AOL News, J.P. Myers– who recently made the dream of a marker to commemorate the man who penned “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” a reality–and his wife have joined forces with Steve Goldstein, the author of LA’s Graveside Companion: Where the V.I.P.’s R.I.P. to launch a campaign to raise funds for a permanent tribute for Toto. The beloved dog who went over the rainbow crossed Rainbow Bridge back in 1945, and although her final resting place in the back yard of her trainer Carl Spitz was disturbed to make way for a highway–with her remains possibly moved to the trainer’s North Hollywood home– her spirit is stirring fans to donate for a plot (which is estimated to cost $650) and a granite marker (which will require $3,000 in funds.)
Dog devotees who are interested in helping the efforts to create a tribute to Toto can also attend the first annual Pet Memorial Day and Blessing of the Animals at the L.A. Pet Memorial Park at 11 on November 7, 2010, where J.P. Myers will have a table to take donations for the cause. While at the pet cemetery, movie lovers can also pay their respects to the Fidos of the famous, including Kabar, the Great Dane who faithful stayed by the bedside of Rudolph Valentino during the silver screen star’s final moments; Droopy, the beloved Beagle of legend Lauren Bacall, and Meatball, the bulldog who donned a tuxedo for the wedding of his human parent, Adam Sandler.
