By pledging to provide food for orphaned pets, Ellen DeGeneres also provided nourishment for the souls of animal lovers this past year.
A promise made in March 2010 to donate 1 million meals to adoptable dogs and cats has been fulfilled, thanks to Halo, Purely for Pets– the holistic pet care company co-owned by the talk show host– which partnered with a number of other non-profit organizations, including Freekibble, ASPCA, Pets for Patriots, The Humane Society of the US and the National Canine Cancer Foundation, in order to make the dream a reality.
Halo also offered people passionate about pets the opportunity to join forces to help feed homeless Fidos and felines through contests, Facebook, Twitter and Freekibble.com.
The campaign to curb hunger in shelter pets was officially launched on April 30, 2010 when the United States Postal Service unveiled its 2010 social awareness stamp, “Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet,” which showcased 10 formerly homeless dogs and cats who now have loving homes.
Due to DeGeneres’s generosity, pets who are waiting for their forever families at Caboodle Ranch in Jacksonville, FL, San Francisco Animal Care & Control, Rescue Ink, ASPCA New York, Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Search Dog Foundation, The Cat House on the Kings in Parlier, CA, Humane Society of Central Oregon, and approximately 100 other shelters are now enjoying a taste of the good life.
